Stopping the Photo/Fixing the Poem – Photo-poetry Reading with Brian Johnstone
September 15 @ 6:30 pm - 7:30 pm
A poetry reading with a difference, this event will combine projected, historic photographs with live readings of the poems they inspired. Always fascinated by photography, poet, writer and performer Brian Johnstone is a former camera club president who was active as an amateur photographer in the ’80s and ’90s with two solo exhibitions to his name. The images from which he has derived inspiration for his poetry range works by Robert Moyes Adam and Thomas Rodger from University of St Andrews Special Collections, to his father’s wartime snapshots from the Africa campaign, to American images by Alfred Steigliz and Southworth & Hawes.
Brian Johnstone’s poetry has appeared throughout Scotland, elsewhere in the UK, in North America and across Europe. He has published six collections, most recently Dry Stone Work (Arc, 2014). His poems have been translated into over a dozen languages. In 2015 his work was selected to appear on the Poetry Archive website. His memoir Double Exposure was published by Saraband in February 2017. A founder and former Director of StAnza: Scotland’s International Poetry Festival, he has appeared at various poetry festivals, from Macedonia to Nicaragua, and at numerous venues across the UK. http://brianjohnstonepoet.co.uk/
